From Arab Excellence’s 2017 program at UAE University’s Science & Innovation Park in Al Ain to the Falling Walls stage, Shaima AlQassab and her AlgaLife team demonstrate the power of combining scientific knowledge, entrepreneurial ambition, and the courage to share an idea with the world.

As a co-founder of AlgaLife, Shaima presents a vision for using algae to develop useful products with environmental benefits. Her journey, featured in this Arab Excellence alumni success story, brings together innovation, purpose, and a determination to move ideas forward.

Connecting science with practical needs

In the video, Shaima introduces a printing concept combining cost-effective portable printers with algae-based ink.

The project connects scientific expertise with a practical ambition: finding new ways to make everyday products while considering their environmental impact.

For young innovators, AlgaLife offers an example of how specialist knowledge can become the starting point for entrepreneurship. The opportunity begins with asking where that knowledge could meet a real need.

Exploring possibilities while staying focused

The team’s ambitions extend beyond ink. Shaima explains that their expertise in algae opens opportunities across different product categories.

“We have already got offers for collaboration to produce 3D printer filaments and cosmetics.”— Shaima AlQassab

Yet exploring opportunities also requires choosing where to concentrate effort. In her presentation, Shaima makes clear that developing their ink remains the team’s immediate priority.

This balance between curiosity and focus is a valuable entrepreneurial lesson: recognize the wider potential of an idea, then commit to the work needed to develop it.

The courage to take the stage

The video follows Shaima as she presents AlgaLife at Falling Walls, bringing the team’s work before an international audience.

Communicating an innovation requires more than understanding its science. It means explaining its purpose, making its potential clear, and giving others a reason to engage.

Shaima and her team received a special mention from the jury, recognizing:

“The outstanding pitch of Shaima and her courage, energy and passion.”— Jury recognition, as presented in the video

That recognition celebrates both the presentation and the personal qualities behind it. Courage, energy, and passion help an idea move beyond the laboratory and into conversations where new connections become possible.

A vision expressed with conviction

Shaima closes her pitch with a memorable statement:

“The future will be written with algae.”— Shaima AlQassab

It captures the team’s ambition and belief in the possibilities of their work.

For the Arab Excellence community, Shaima and AlgaLife offer an inspiring example of alumni putting their knowledge into action. Their story encourages young people to explore the value of their expertise, develop their ability to communicate, and take the next step towards sharing their ideas with the world.
